The Fairway is the part of the waterway which, according to local circumstances, is used through shipping traffic.

A waterway is an area in river courses and coastal waters marked and indicated by buoys and having sufficient depth for navigation. It may be artificial or natural and may be widened or deepened. The channel is designated as a fairway by the markings. Sailors should avoid it if possible and leave it to commercial shipping.
